WORDS

The Words Collection is a glass and mixed media expression of proverbs and passages of text. All Words Collection pieces are accompanied by a copy of the relevant text. For information on special pieces based on Words important to you, please call or send me an email inquiry.

Glass Books

Glass Books are small handmade books with glass and mixed media covers, and interior pages of handmade paper. Covers are joined with copper, silver or niobium wire and variously incorporate fiber, stone, pearl, antique/ancient beads, feather, and metal. The piece pictured is Desert Fire School, part of a larger sculptural piece originally made for a gallery exhibit.

Glass Books now include Mayan Spirits, Sisters, Spirit Places, and several others. Glass Books can also be made as tiny journals / albums or commissioned with individualized text.

Mayan Spirits

Mayan Spirits pieces – pendants, glass books, and boxes – are based on the Tzutuhil Maya’s belief that the gods put up with us in spite of all the damage we do to the Earth and to each other because they’re addicted to how beautiful and funny we are. (See Martin Prechtel’s book, Long Life, Honey in the Heart.) Mayan Spirits images are drawn with 24kt gold ink on dark iridescent glass.

Three Gates

Three Gates pendants and small wall pieces are based on the Sufi proverb below:

All words must pass through three gates before being spoken. At the first gate, the gatekeeper asks, “Is it true?” At the second gate, he asks, "Is it kind?" and at the third, “Is it necessary?” Only then should the words be said aloud.
